RSL’S Rimando named MLS player of the month

July 31st, 2008

Posted: 1:17 PM- Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando has been named the Major League Soccer player of the month, after posting three shutouts in four games in July.
“It feels great that our defense - not just me, not just our back four, but our entire team’s commitment to the defensive side of the ball - has been recognized, and I’m grateful to be so honored on the team’s behalf,” Rimando said.
Rimando is the first RSL player to win the award since striker Jeff Cunningham in August of 2006. His efforts have helped RSL climb to the top of the MLS Western Conference standings for the first time in its history, with a 7-6-6 record - the first winning record ever for the fourth-year team.

Davis: Morales Leading the Charge in Salt Lake

July 28th, 2008

Goal.com USA’s Randy Davis profiles Real Salt Lake’s playmaker, who was one of many snubs for last Thursday night’s MLS All-Star Game.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — He came to the team as one of “the three Argentines.” But in the nearly 12 months since joining Real Salt Lake, Javier Morales has clearly distinguished himself from his fellow countrymen.

That’s not to say that Fabian Espindola and Matias Mantilla aren’t quality players, but Morales has already demonstrated that he is one of the top playmakers in Major League Soccer. In fact, the attacking midfielder was the main name bandied about when All-Star snubs were discussed the past few weeks.

All of that is lost on this unassuming player from the Buenos Aires area. When asked how he felt to be mentioned in the same breath as fellow countrymen and creative playmaking midfielders — Marcello Gallardo and Guillermo Barros Schelotto – Morales shrugged this off.

“I believe that those players are at a different level just because obviously they have had experience with the National Team and just their whole history as soccer players,” he said through translator (and teammate) Tino Nunez. “But I am thankful for the recognition and to be mentioned with them, but I just work hard.”

Morales’ path to Real Salt Lake has included some good experience with some noteworthy teams, as he has played for Lanus, Newell’s Old Boys, Arsenal de Sarandi and Instituto de Cordoba in the Primera Division in Argentina over a period of nine seasons where he notched just four goals in 121 appearances. Yet in 2006 he was spotted by a representative of UD Vecindario of Spain’s Second Division.

“They saw me playing in one of the games in Argentina and liked me,” said Morales. That’s how they picked me up.”

Although he only played 25 games in Spain, he performed well, scoring five goals in his midfield role. However, last summer an agent put him in contact with Real Salt Lake, who were shopping for a creative player. Fortunately for Jason Kreis’ side, he was exactly what they were looking for.

Morales made an immediate impact with RSL, assisting on a Mantilla goal off his corner kick just 40 seconds into his debut. That 3-1 victory over Kansas City was one of a few highlights for the club last season. Another Morales highlight came from a free kick from 25 feet out against the Galaxy that found the upper right corner of the net. His season ended abruptly, though, as he had a serious shoulder injury that required surgery to repair a torn labrum in the offseason.

It’s no coincidence that Real Salt Lake has found itself atop the Western Division at the same time that Morales’ play has started to earn him some national recognition. He is the motor behind the team, and when he is able to play with the ball at his feet the team tends to create chances offensively. He has three goals this season to go along with his seven assists (tied for 2nd in the league).

While RSL’s defense has been stellar (Real has given up just 19 goals, second only to Chicago), the team has also put up a league-high 247 shots, partly due to the chances Morales is creating the strikers. However, the team also has the second lowest finishing percentage in the league.

Real Salt Lake started the season with two basic tenants as explained by head coach Jason Kreis:

1. “The team is the star.” In other words, no individual player is above any other player.

2. “We are not setting a goal of making the playoffs.” Kreis didn’t want to put that pressure on his younger players early in the season.

However, now that the team is at the top of the West, that’s all changed.

“It’s good,” said Morales, who has three goals to go with his team-leading seven assists (tied for second in MLS). “Every time we’re playing better. It’s better soccer. We’re putting in the work and maintaining the first place spot, but our goal is to make the playoffs.”

For that to happen, the star of Javier Morales will have to continue to shine.

RSL players named to U.S. Olympic team for Beijing

July 17th, 2008

Article Last Updated: 07/17/2008 11:11:00 AM MDT

Posted: 11:07 AM- Goalkeeper Chris Seitz and midfielder Nathan Sturgis of Real Salt Lake were named today to the U.S. Olympic Team for the upcoming Beijing Games in China, with striker Robbie Findley chosen as an alternate.

“I don’t look at it as anything other than it’s a great opportunity,” Seitz said recently. “If I get the opportunity to go, I’m going to represent my country and represent my family and everyone as best I can.”

Seitz has not played a Major League Soccer game for RSL this season, his second since becoming the fourth overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft, and figures to be the backup for the Americans, who also named former Chivas USA keeper Brad Guzan to the team.

Having just transferred to Aston Villa of the English Premier League, Guzan is one of three “over-age” players named to the otherwise under-23 Olympic team, along with defender Michael Parkhurst of the New England Revolution and legendary national-team striker Brian McBride, who’s working on returning to MLS from Fulham of the Premier League.

Sturgis was something of a surprise selection, if only because he has scarcely played in the last two months because of a hamstring injury.

His entrance in the 89th minute of a victory over Columbus last weekend was his first appearance for RSL since April 19, and he left a reserve game at Brigham Young on Tuesday night after just eight minutes.

His injury history increases the likelihood that Findley could be on the team in China. Teams are allowed to replace injured players before the Olympics begin, so Findley could participate if Sturgis or another player cannot.

All three RSL players are expected to travel with the team to its game at Chicago on Saturday, before departing for training camp with the Olympic team. They probably will miss only two league games - against Toronto at home on July 28 and at Houston on Aug. 16 - though they could miss a third if they play unexpectedly well in China.

RSL: Mathis suits up for RSL reserves

July 16th, 2008

The Salt Lake Tribune

Former World Cup icon Clint Mathis played for the Real Salt Lake reserves in their 3-0 victory against BYU in the inaugural game at the renovated Stadium at South Field in Provo on Tuesday, as part of an agreement to train with RSL ahead of his anticipated return to Europe.
The former RSL midfielder is not expected to join the team again during the current MLS transfer window, but such a move might be possible. The team has three available roster spots, Mathis is out of contract after playing for Ergotelis in Greece - the Los Angeles Galaxy still own his MLS rights - and he has remained friends with coach Jason Kreis.

Real Salt Lake to test mettle against defending champs

July 2nd, 2008

If you had wagered back in March that Real Salt Lake would be even with the Houston Dynamo in the Western Conference standings halfway through the 2008 season, you would have received the longest of odds. After all, RSL had done little to distinguish itself in three barren seasons, while Houston was (and still is) the two-time defending MLS champion.

Yet 15 games into the current campaign, Real does indeed find itself on level terms with the Dynamo.  Coach Jason Kreis’ outfit, while still short of MLS Cup quality, has undergone a considerable overhaul and has stepped into what is, for them, the rarified air of a playoff contender. Houston, meanwhile, has struggled a bit more this season with the bull’s-eye that comes with being the defending champion and has been unable to get on the kind of roll that characterizes championship teams.

So is the balance of power shifting in the Western Conference? While not quite giving a definitive answer, this week’s “MLS Primetime Thursday” matchup between RSL and Houston should be revealing, with sole possession of first place in the conference going to the winner.

Houston Dynamo at Real Salt Lake, 10:00 p.m. (ESPN2 / Deportes)

* This will be the first meeting between the clubs in 2008, and it could be vital for playoff positioning at the end of the season. The teams are currently tied for second in the Western Conference with 19 points. * Goalkeepers Pat Onstad (Houston) and Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake) could be in for a long night as the teams rank 1st and 2nd in shots taken - Real Salt Lake 192 and Houston 190. * Real Salt Lake is one of only two teams yet to lose at home this season (Toronto FC). * Houston’s last win came nearly a month ago, June 8 at home versus Toronto FC.

I don’t know about this summary.  RSL may be high in the league for shots taken, but the league doesn’t differentiate between “on frame” and “off target.”  Don’t forget RSL’s 24 shot game (with only 4 on target, and several of them right at the keep)

RSL own goal hands Wizards first win in 7 league fixtures

July 1st, 2008

After the two teams battled to a scoreless draw for 89 minutes at CommuityAmerica Ballpark, the Wizards were awarded a direct free-kick from about 30 yards out. Kansas City’s Davy Arnaud chipped the ball into a crowd of players, hoping that defender Jimmy Conrad would knock the ball home, but RSL defender Tony Beltran beat him to it and deflected the ball into his own net…

ps.  Don’t forget who gave them the free kick…  Thanks Cutler & Beltran (you make a great pair!)
